A TRIBUTE TO BURTON GREENWOOD, Sr. by Jack S. Barnes
Burton Greenwood, Sr., NFA Secretary-Treasurer and Directory Chairman, has died after many years struggle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrigs Disease). I know Burt had many admiring friends, and I'm proud to be one of them. I never knew anyone who had as many friends or who deserved them more. I never knew anyone who received so many special tributes or who deserved them more. The Greenwood Family has lost someone very special. The NFA Association has lost someone very special. Both the Auction and Recovery Industry has lost someone very special. Mankind has lost a gentleman, and someone very special. Burt was a fighter. He fought hard to achieve goals he felt were beneficial. Although he fought hard, he did not try to kill. He fought to win his point but not to personally injure the opponent. Burt worked hard and achieved much in the business world, and he was also an outstanding social companion. You could always count on Burt to find the finest restaurant in any city we visited. It was a pleasure and honor to be included in his entourage. Burt was in his finest role as captain of his beloved Eggharbour Yacht, "The Locator." Burt was a master at the controls docking the boat in unbelievable difficult slots by friendly restaurants. He proved himself to be calm and capable master sailor when we were once caught in a fast developing storm on the Chesapeake. He captained his life as he did his boat, with forethought, determination, intelligence and with a great love for life. When the great poet wrote "Lives of great men all remind us, we can make our lives sublime" it was men like Burt Greenwood he was referring to. Since becoming a member of NFA in 1974, I have spent some of the time nose to nose with Burt in passionate disagreement, more of the time shoulder to shoulder in worthwhile projects, but most of the time hand in hand working for the association. He was a gentleman and a giant in this industry. Burt Greenwood was a friend of mine. I am blessed for that relationship. |
